Mogadishu, Somalia – On April 27, 2023, the National Communications Authority (NCA) of Somalia, in collaboration with the National Telecommunication and Technology (NTTI), successfully hosted the Girls in ICT Day event to inspire girls and young women to consider studies and careers in the ICT field. The event is part of an annual campaign initiated by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to encourage and empower women in the technology industry.
The Girls in ICT Day event included several activities, including seven free blended training workshops for 100 girls. The courses covered topics such as web development, graphic design, cybersecurity, computer networks, e-commerce, and communication skills. Additionally, the event featured a competition among females, with four female participants winning prizes. The competition required participants to choose a topic, such as Tech Entrepreneurship, Educational Resources, or Climate change, and discuss challenges and opportunities within the Somali landscape while suggesting solutions using ICT.
Fatima Mohamed Abukar, a 3rd-year Computer Science student, expressed her gratitude towards NCA and NTTI for providing her with the opportunity to participate in Girls in ICT Day. “As a result, I have taken many courses, including cybersecurity, networking, Linux, and graphics. I encourage other girls in ICT to participate next year so that they can benefit more,” she said.
NCA is committed to empowering and encouraging young women to consider careers in the field of information and communication technologies. Since 2018, NCA has been celebrating Girls in ICT Day, and more than 300 girls have benefited from it. The event has become a significant platform to inspire young girls and women to pursue careers in the ICT industry.
