Mogadishu, Somalia – Hormuud Telecom has launched its 5G network, marking a new era of connectivity for the nation. The inaugural ceremony, held on Thursday, was honored by the presence of Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud, the President of Somalia, who commended Hormuud Telecom for its crucial role in enhancing the country’s telecommunications framework.
This significant development aligns with the recent completion of the National 5G Plan and Strategy by the National Communications Authority (NCA), a blueprint that commenced in early 2023 to steer the deployment of 5G technology across the country. This strategy was designed to manage 5G resources efficiently, ensuring minimal interference and adherence to the global standards established by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The primary objective is safeguarding consumer interests and fostering a conducive environment for telecom companies investing in this transformative technology.
Mr. Mustafa Yasin Sheikh, the NCA’s General Manager, applauded Hormuud Telecom’s commendable strides in the telecommunications sector. Collaboration between the regulatory authority and industry stakeholders, including Hormuud, has been instrumental in the regulatory advancements within Somalia.The General Manager acknowledged Hormuud Telecom’s substantial investments and unwavering commitment to launching the 5G service, expressing optimism for its significant impact on communication and technology services in the country.
Other local operators, Somtel and Telesom, have also launched 5G networks in the past two months, further extending the reach and accessibility of ultra-fast internet services throughout Somalia. Hormuud Telecom’s rollout of 5G is a testament to the company’s dedication to innovation and continued leadership in the telecommunications industry.
